A Point Break gives rise to a special wave which wraps around a point or headland to then ride far along the coastline. When conditions are met, most surfers would consider it the "perfect wave".
It is also a key process in coastal geomorphology, shaping the landscape and modifying the shoreline.
A similar way, we can think of the collective behavior which eventually unleashes a complete topple.
Let's think about having two alternatives to take action upon; it is natural to evaluate benefit over cost, however both could vary based on how many individuals have already opted for one or the other. According to Morton Grodzins, there is a particular point where net benefits exceed net costs referred to as "that one too many".
Making echo on Mark Granovetter analysis of social networks, our theme this year focuses on "social change" attained by civil engagement. We pay important attention to the diffusion of information, influence, opportunity and how these could lead to the emergence of self-organized groups to promote positive change in our local and global community.

We are honored to bring back to Delray Beach TEDx Talks, an annual event where local heroes, hidden talent, community advocates, innovators, scientists, artists, industry experts, and athletes get together to inform, share perspectives, connect and inspire you.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)
TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California 30 years ago, TED has grown to support its mission with multiple initiatives. The two annual TED Conferences invite the world’s leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes or less. Many of these talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Sal Khan and Daniel Kahneman.
With increasing social challenges and opportunities for growth, this theme encourages the community to come together, channel energy into positive action, and shape the future of Delray Beach in a way that reflects shared values and aspirations. - Steve Wilt
“TEDxDelrayBeach is on the forefront of creating positive change in this community! I’m looking forward to hearing the brilliant, world-changing ideas that will be shared on this stage.”- Lisa Powell Graham

Our world is increasingly fractured by the pervasive ignorance that fuels division. The path to a truly inclusive society lies in fostering exposure and cultivating acceptance. This TEDx talk will serve as a powerful catalyst for bridging these divides, encouraging a deeper understanding and embracing of our shared humanity. -Anonymous
The theme Point BREAK perfectly reflects the moment we are in as a community. We are at a critical juncture where we must break free from outdated systems, limiting beliefs, and conditioned ways of thinking that no longer serve us. Much like a wave crashing against the shore, this break symbolizes the opportunity for a fresh start—a chance to embrace change, challenge the status quo, and redefine what progress and success look like in our lives. At this particular time, we need to confront these pivotal moments, step into new possibilities, and seize the power of transformation. – Dre Baldwin
This theme emphasizes the power of community-driven efforts to create lasting, positive impacts, aligning with Delray Beach’s values of collaboration and active participation in shaping their local environment. The theme "Point Break" resonates deeply with Delray Beach at this moment, symbolizing a critical turning point for the community. Just like how a point break in surfing creates the perfect wave that transforms the shoreline, Delray Beach is experiencing a convergence of factors that can lead to significant social and cultural shifts. - Nina Maouelainin
The "Point BREAK" theme perfectly captures the transformative moment our community is experiencing—a time where collective action and values-driven leadership can shape our future just as a point break sculpts the shoreline. Delray Beach, known for its vibrant community and forward-thinking spirit, is at a pivotal point where we can ride the wave of positive social change. By embracing a culture rooted in strong values and engaging in civil action, we have the opportunity to create a lasting impact that will ripple through our community and beyond. This is our moment to shape the landscape of our future, ensuring that Delray Beach becomes not just a community of today, but a legacy for generations to come. - Dr. Bernie Mullin
The theme Point BREAK resonates deeply with Delray Beach as it stands on the edge of a powerful social and cultural transformation. Just like a point break reshapes the coastline, our community’s collective actions can reshape the landscape of our society. Delray Beach, with its rich diversity and vibrant culture, is positioned to lead a wave of positive change that extends far beyond our local borders. The concept of respect as a tool to turn conflict into collaboration mirrors the dynamics of a point break—a small, strategic shift that creates far-reaching, transformative impact. Now is the time for Delray Beach to harness this momentum, riding the wave of social evolution with respect as the cornerstone of a stronger, more connected community.- Gregg Ward
The theme Point BREAK is deeply resonant with our community at this particular moment. We're living through times where collective and individual pressures—whether they be emotional, social, or environmental—are pushing many to a breaking point. But a "break" can be seen as both a rupture and a turning point. In the therapeutic world, it's often in moments of breaking that we find the opportunity for profound transformation. I believe Point BREAK invites our community to embrace this moment of vulnerability as a powerful catalyst for change, grounded in both reason and relational connection. This theme is perfectly aligned with the shifts we are experiencing, offering hope and the promise of creating something new and stronger on the other side. - Christalyn Warner, M.S., LMFT
Delray Beach, known for its active civic engagement and close-knit social networks, exemplifies how the diffusion of ideas and group actions can create significant positive changes, much like the waves that reshape the shorelines. - Anonymous
I think as a community, and larger society as a whole, we are reaching a breaking point in several areas: health, environment, economy. And I feel that if we don’t become more informed and begin making changes in these areas, society as we know it will cease to exist. - Erin McCormick
I love the Point BREAK theme for TEDxDelrayBeach! As a Delray Beach resident, a local business owner, and an active member of the Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce, I’m excited to see the world-changing talks on this stage. -Anonymous
“TEDxDelrayBeach is on the forefront of creating positive change in this community! I’m looking forward to hearing the brilliant, world-changing ideas that will be shared on this stage.”~ Two-Time TEDx Speaker and Public Speaking Coach Lisa Powell Graham
Balancing Tradition and Progress: Delray Beach embodies the tension between preserving its historic identity and embracing modern development. Like a “point break,” the community has reached critical junctures where it must balance the old with the new—maintaining its unique character while adapting to increasing demand for housing, tourism, and commercial development.-Anonymous
Delray Beach has a consistent beach culture that draws a reliable crowd of locals and visitors. The community thrives around shared activities like beachgoing, surfing, paddleboarding, and other water sports. The sense of consistency in the town’s beach lifestyle mirrors the way surfers return to a favorite point break for the sense of belonging and camaraderie it fosters. Stephanie Bunnell
Cultural Diversity and Community Cohesion: Another form of point break within Delray Beach is its increasing cultural diversity, which has created new opportunities for inclusivity but also challenges for maintaining community cohesion. This diversity brings richness to the city but also creates moments where the community must adapt and find new ways to embrace change and foster unity. -Anonymous
As it is described on the TEDxDelrayBeach website, I believe the Point BREAK theme of this event relates to civic engagement. What are we each doing to give back to our community? How can our actions have a positive ripple effect on our community?
“TEDxDelrayBeach is a fantastic opportunity for our community to gather to learn from each other, as this event showcases the brilliant ideas and talents of people who call this community home. I’m excited to attend!”
~ Velvet Chong
Environmental and Economic Challenges: Delray Beach faces ongoing environmental challenges, including issues related to coastal erosion and sustainability. These moments act as "point breaks" that force the community to confront climate change, manage coastal resources, and preserve the natural beauty that draws residents and tourists alike. Economically, the city has also had to navigate changes brought by shifts in the tourism industry and the impacts of larger market forces, leading to moments where new strategies and solutions become essential.
